Covestro Launches First Regular E-Truck Deployment To Customer Site In China

Covestro has taken another step toward decarbonizing its supply chain by launching its first regular electric truck deliveries to a customer in China. As part of its expanding green logistics program, a heavy-duty electric truck now transports materials from the Covestro Integrated Site Shanghai to the Tongxiang manufacturing site of China Jushi, the world’s largest fiberglass producer, located in Zhejiang province.

Covering a round-trip of over 200 kilometers, the e-truck is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 36.9 metric tons annually—a 47 percent cut compared to conventional diesel transport, based on estimates from Covestro’s third-party logistics service provider.

This marks the first time Covestro has extended electric transport beyond its own operations to reach a customer site on a regular basis. It builds on experience drawn from short-haul transport using e-trucks to move chemicals between its Shanghai site and nearby warehouses.

“Supply chains play a crucial role in the chemical industry’s path to climate neutrality,” said Marius Wirtz, Head of Supply Chain & Logistics Asia Pacific, Covestro. “This commercial rollout with China Jushi proves that sustainable logistics is both viable and scalable. We’re committed to growing a network of partners to explore and expand transport solutions that bring environmental and business value.”

Pioneering scalable solutions

This cooperation also marks the first time China Jushi has systematically adopted a new energy logistics solution with a partner. The e-truck transports Covestro’s sustainable waterborne polyurethane dispersions to produce fiberglass, which is widely applied in wind turbine blades, new energy vehicles and smart home appliances.

Liao Xinlin, Assistant to President of China Jushi, said: “As a global leader in fiberglass manufacturing, we are committed to driving emission reductions across our operations. The green logistics initiative with Covestro represents a shift in our partnership—from a traditional, materials-based collaboration to a strategic alliance aligned with China’s dual carbon goals. It not only deepens our relationship but also opens new opportunities for broader cooperation.”

“China Jushi has shown exceptional commitment by making this a high-priority project,” said Anand Khot, Head of Coatings and Adhesives Asia Pacific, Covestro. “Our collaboration with Jushi goes beyond supplying high-performance materials— we’re delivering added value by aligning logistics with their climate goals. This differentiated service approach not only supports sustainability, but also deepens customer collaboration and create long-term business value.”

Driving scope 3 emissions reduction

The initiative is part of Covestro’s green logistics program, launched in 2022 in Asia Pacific, where approximately 70 percent of product shipments are transported by truck. The program explores scalable low-carbon options such as electric vehicles, subsidized biodiesel for long-hauls, and hydrogen-powered trucks.

With roughly 80 percent of Covestro’s total emissions stemming from scope 3 sources—including transport and raw material processing—addressing logistics related emissions is a strategic priority. Covestro has committed to reaching climate neutrality for scope 3 emissions by 2050.
