BASF SE has inaugurated a new production line for water-based dispersions at its Heerenveen site in the Netherlands, boosting production capacity without increasing CO2 emissions. This milestone was achieved by utilizing existing infrastructure and facilities, according to the company.
The new production line is powered by green electricity from the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm, operated through BASF’s joint venture with Vattenfall AB (Solna, Sweden) and Allianz.
"Our goal at Heerenveen is to reach CO2 neutrality and support BASF's broader climate goals, while also growing to meet customer demands for products with a minimal ecological footprint," said Sjoerd Visser, site manager at BASF Heerenveen.
BASF’s water-based dispersions cater primarily to the coatings, printing, and packaging sectors, all of which are increasingly shifting towards sustainable solutions in response to rising consumer demand, the company noted.
Visser highlighted that the expansion has “significantly” enhanced production capacity for key BASF-branded products. He added, "Our industry in Europe faces challenges in achieving climate neutrality, circularity, digitalization, and aligning with the EU’s Chemical Strategy for Sustainability. Together with our innovation team at Heerenveen, we are dedicated to addressing these challenges head-on."
