The final report from the public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower disaster has spread the blame widely across government, the fire service, architects and contractors, and material suppliers. These include Celotex and Kingspan, which supplied insulation, and Arconic, which made the panels.
“The simple truth is that the deaths that occurred were all avoidable and that those who lived in the tower were badly failed over a number of years and in a number of different ways by those who were responsible for ensuring the safety of the building and its occupants,” said inquiry chairman Martin Moore-Bick. No criminal charges are expected to be made before 2026 at the earliest.
The June 2017 fire in the high-rise residential block, which was started by a faulty refrigerator on the fourth floor, killed 72 people after it spread all the way up the building to the 24th floor within half an hour. It was fuelled by the combustible cladding and insulation that had been installed on the outside of the building.
