On the afternoon of August 10th, a significant explosion occurred at the Evonik Industries chemical plant in Theodore, Alabama. The incident, which took place around 2:06 p.m., prompted an immediate response from local firefighters who were dispatched to the scene at approximately 2:36 p.m.
A large smoke plume was reported to be visible from across Mobile Bay, capturing the attention of local residents and news outlets. Preliminary investigations by three responding units revealed that the explosion was caused by the over-pressurization of a railcar carrying hydrogen peroxide. The railcar had been involved in an earlier accident that led to the catastrophic event.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. Although Evonik Industries confirmed that the situation was under control, units from the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) remained on standby to provide additional support if required.
The Theodore plant, which is the largest Evonik site in North America, employs approximately 750 people.
