Explosion and Fire at BASF Ludwigshafen Plant: No Environmental Impact Reported

On July 29, 2024, at approximately 12 PM CEST, an explosion followed by a fire occurred due to a leak of an organic solvent at a BASF plant located in the southern part of the Ludwigshafen site. This facility specializes in the production of aroma ingredients and precursors for vitamin manufacturing. The fire was successfully extinguished by the BASF company fire department at around 12:45 PM CEST.

All injured employees were able to leave the Medical Center by the evening of July 29.

There was no contamination detected in the air, water, or soil. BASF’s environmental monitoring vehicles, operating both inside and outside the site, did not detect any product residues. The plant has been shut down and is currently in a safe condition.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, and the relevant authorities have been notified.

At this time, BASF has not commented on any potential impacts on customers. Further updates will be provided as soon as relevant information becomes available. BASF has emphasized its commitment to the protection of health, safety, and the environment, prioritizing the well-being of employees, communities, and customers.
