Changhua Chemical Breaks Ground on CO2-Based Polyols and High-Performance Polyols Project

PUdaily | Updated: June 26, 2024

On June 24, Changhua Chemical Technology (Lianyungang) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Changhua Chemical Technology Co., Ltd., held a groundbreaking ceremony in Lianyungang for the CO2-based polyols and high-performance polyols project. The project, with a total investment of around CNY 5.8 billion, covers an area of about 440,000 square meters and will be constructed in phases. The first phase includes a 80ktpa CO2-based polyols facility, a 300ktpa polyether polyols facility, a 360ktpa polymer polyols facility, and a 0.8ktpa catalyst facility. The 80ktpa CO2-based polyols facility is the world’s first manufacturing project for low-temperature and low-pressure CO2-based polyols.

“Changhua Chemical has sticked to the development philosophy ‘advocating low carbon economy, leading technology-driven chemistry’, and is dedicated to promoting industrial upgrades through technological innovation,” said Chen Fengqiu, general manager at Changhua Chemical. “Changhua Chemical (Lianyungang) Co., Ltd. is founded based on the strategic deployment of Lianyungang Petrochemical Industry Base, in line with national policies and industrial development trends. We will adopt a practical and rigorous attitude to ensure safe construction and promote project progress in strict accordance with high-quality, high-level, and high-efficiency requirements.”

“Addressing climate change is one of the defining issues of our era. Changhua Chemical shows true leadership by investing in new technologies that will help society succeed in reducing carbon emissions and creating more sustainable solutions for generations to come,” said Keith Wiggins, CEO of Econic Technologies.

“After decades of development, China has made remarkable achievements in the polyurethane industry and established an integrated polyurethane industry chain, contributing to economic and social development. Chinese polyurethane industry is transitioning to a stage of high-quality development. Changhua Chemical’s CO2-based polyols and high-performance polyols project not only aligns with the country’s dual carbon goals and green economy transition but also represents an important initiative driving industry innovation. The integration of carbon reduction and new materials through carbon dioxide technology in Changhua Chemical’s project holds profound significance for promoting high-quality development in the polyurethane industry,” commented Yang Maoliang, chairman of China Polyurethane Industry Association.

“The initiation of CO2-based polyols and high-performance polyols project is a crucial step for Changhua Chemical in its strategy for green chemistry and sustainable development, aligning with the national dual carbon targets,” said Dr. Gu, chairman of Changhua Chemical. “We are utilizing leading global CO2 conversion technology and intelligent manufacturing systems to ensure the safety, efficiency, and environmental friendliness of production processes. Today, we venture into a new era of zero-carbon polyols. Let’s move to a more sustainable future through innovation and responsibility.”

“Changhua Chemical’s CO2-based polyols and high-performance polyols project is a key project for extending the industrial chain of Lianyungang Petrochemical Industry Base. This project showcases Changhua Chemical’s innovative strength in green chemistry and marks a milestone for the city’s sustainable development. It will promote green transformations of the base and spur sustainable development of the city,” remarked Mr. Lyu, vice mayor of Lianyungang.

Groundbreaking Ceremony

Going forward, Changhua Chemical will continue to uphold the development philosophy of low-carbon and sustainable development, striving to become an innovative “accelerator” in the polyurethane industry, dedicated to drive green transformations of the industry chain.
