Huntsman has expanded its portfolio of Shokless products for the automotive sector, adding polyurethane foams for the potting and fixation of electric vehicle batteries. The range also includes products that can be used as mouldable encapsulants in battery modules and packs.
“The polyurethane foam can give the structural strength to the battery pack,” Irina Bolshakova, Huntsman’s strategic global marketing director for polyurethane in the automotive sector told Urethanes Technology International at the UTECH Europe show in Maastricht. “It can give terminal protection to the battery, and improve the speed of assembly of the battery packs.”
The foam systems help safeguard the structural integrity of EV batteries in the case of impact or a thermal event. The range of low to high density foams can be used via common PU dispensing processes, with a wide processing window for additional flexibility in handling.
The systems have good compression and tensile performance, with high elongation to failure. The elastic performance can remain stable at operating temperatures from –35°C to +80°C. They have low viscosity, cure quickly at low temperatures.
