On February 5, 2024, Huntsman announced that Shanghai Lianheng Isocyanate Co., Ltd. (SLIC) has completed spin-off. From now on, Huntsman, together with Shanghai Chlor-Alkali Chemical Co., Ltd, will own and operate one of crude MDI facility in Caojing independently, along with a hydrogen chloride recycling unit for the production of chlorine. This will bring more flexibility and autonomy for the development of Huntsman’s polyurethanes business.
Tireless Efforts Leading to Brilliant Achievements
In the early 2000s, Huntsman entered the Shanghai Chemical Park via the SLIC project, becoming the first completed project in the park. In 2006, SLIC completed its first MDI plant, followed by a second MDI plant in 2018. Since the start of operations of the two MDI plants, the asset restructuring of SLIC has been included in the joint agreement.
Over the past 17 years, SLIC has provided Huntsman with ample low-cost, high-quality polyurethane raw materials, making significant contributions to Huntsman’s polyurethanes downstream operations in China and Asia.
Business Optimization Driving Sustainable Growth
The completion of this spin-off and restructuring marks a new milestone in the development of Huntsman’s polyurethanes business in China. By integrating the production of polyurethane raw materials and downstream systems materials, Huntsman will enhance its autonomy and flexibility, drive product portfolio upgrades and value creation, and achieve better synergies in China and the Asia Pacific region.
In the future, Huntsman’s polyurethanes segment will provide downstream customers with more innovative solutions, driving sustainable development for customers and better meeting their future innovation and growth needs with its four sustainable innovative solutions in the areas of clothing, food, housing and transportation.
