Britas Polymers (BPPL) is constructing its third prepolymer system facility in the western Indian state of Gujarat. An investment of around $4 million is being made in the upcoming site located in Sayakha (Bharuch), Gujarat. Spanning a 10,000m2 area, with an additional 10,000m2 under consideration for future expansion, the plant is anticipated to be the largest, capable of producing 18,000 tons per annum [18kt] of prepolymers. Construction is underway, and the third system house is expected to be operational by the end of 2024, according to Vasant Gori, the director of Britas Polymers.
Strategically situated near Dahej, a significant industrial and port city in the region, the Sayakha site will be equipped with dedicated reactors for prepolymer production, improved infrastructure, and increased automation. This investment aims to meet the growing demands of key sectors in the area, such as automotive (projected to grow at a CAGR of 8%), insulation, and CASE applications (experiencing around 15% annual growth).
BPPL, headquartered in Mumbai, currently operates two existing sites in Sarigam (Valsad) and Himatnagar (Sabarkantha) with capacities of 7kt and 11kt/pa, respectively. Established in 2009, BPPL initially focused on trading basic and specialty chemicals before expanding into the production of prepolymer systems. The Sarigam plant, established in 2014, produces modified isocyanates and blended polyols, while the Himatnagar site, which commenced production in mid-2022, is dedicated to polyol production. The new Sayakha plant is expected to cover the entire product range.
BPPL's current production, including isocyanates, polyols, and various PU additives, serves applications in automotive interiors, rebonded foam, rigid polyurethane systems (for building insulation, HVAC, thermoware, and solar panels), and CASE. Approximately 30-40% of Britas' production is exported to markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
