Japanese petrochemical firm Mitsui Chemicals plans to supply biomass-based bisphenol A (BPA) to fellow producer Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC), for producing bio-polycarbonate at its Kashima plant in the eastern prefecture of Ibaraki.
Mitsui did not disclose the volumes of bio-BPA to be supplied to MGC, or the planned output of bio-polycarbonate. MGC also plans to use its methanol made from CO2, green hydrogen and recycled plastics to manufacture polycarbonate in coming years.
Mitsui Chemicals has produced biomass-based petrochemical goods such as ethylene, propylene, benzene, polypropylene, polyethylene and phenol since December 2021 by purchasing bio-naphtha from Finnish refiner Neste. Mitsui Chemicals has manufactured bio-products through mass balance approach under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus certification scheme.
MGC's purchase of bio-BPA from Mitsui Chemicals follows domestic petrochemical firm Teijin's purchase to manufacture bio-polycarbonate.
