Cold chain logistics generally refers to a systematic project in which refrigerated and frozen foods are always in the prescribed temperature control environment during the production, storage, transportation, sales and consumption, in order to ensure food quality and reduce food loss. It is established with the progress of science and technology and the development of refrigeration technology, and it’s a temperature-controlled logistics process based on refrigeration technology. As for the application of cold chain logistics, the cold chain logistics includes: primary agricultural products: vegetables, fruits; meat, poultry, eggs; aquatic products, flower products. Processed food: frozen food, poultry, meat, aquatic products and other packaged cooked food, ice cream and dairy products, chocolate; fast food raw materials. Special commodity: medicine. Generally, the drugs that require cold chain transportation include: vaccines, biological products, biological drugs, diagnostic reagents, etc.

Because the food cold chain is a supply chain system with the purpose of ensuring the quality of perishable foodstuffs and keeping the low temperature environment as the core requirement, this requirement is higher and more complex than that of the general normal temperature logistics system, with a much larger construction investment. To sum up, it's a huge system engineering. As the timeliness of perishable food requires higher organization and coordination of each link of the cold chain, the operation of the food cold chain is always related to the energy consumption cost. It’s a close relation between the effective control of the operation cost and the progress of the food cold chain.

In 2019, the market scale of China cold chain logistics industry is about 339.1 billion RMB. And it will usher in a good opportunity for development in the future. According to the forecast of the China Cold Chain Alliance (CCCA), by 2020, the market scale of China's cold chain logistics industry will reach 469.8 billion RMB, and the total demand for cold chain logistics will reach 240 million tons; by 2025, the market scale of the cold chain logistics industry will exceed 550 billion RMB.

With the development of the industry environment and the improvement of market demand, according to the forecast by CCCA, China's cold chain logistics market demand will continue its growth in the future, which will reach 240 million tons by 2020.

Cold chain logistics plays an important role in ensuring the hygiene, quality and safety of food. China attaches great importance to the development of cold chain logistics and has issued relevant policies to support it. On June 8, 2020, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) of China issued the "Notice on Transport to Promote Consumption and Enlarge Capacity and Upgrade Quality", and once again proposed the future development direction for the cold chain logistics industry. At the same time, for the transportation and distribution standards of the cold chain logistics industry, the national standard "Guide for Planning and Design of Food Low Temperature Distribution Center" (GB/T 38375-2019), which was implemented on July 1, 2020, gives a reference and specification.
