On March 21, the CNY 40 billion project for comprehensive utilization of alkane (hereafter referred to as "the project"), the largest private industrial project Maoming city had ever seen in its history, was started in Guangdong Maoming Binhai New Area.

Donghua Energy Limited by Share Ltd. And Jinhui New Materials Equity Investment Center are jointly responsible for the construction of the project. Implemented in three phases, the project focuses on using imported alkane to produce polypropylene and hydrogen, building a world-class polypropylene facility, and expanding into carbon fiber, 3D printing and hydrogen energy businesses. When completed, the project can annually produce 4.5 million tons of propylene, 3.5 million to 4 million tons of polypropylene and 200,000 tons of hydrogen.

With an investment of about CNY16.6 billion, the Phase I project includes two 1 million tons/year PDH units, four 500,000 tons/year PP units, a wharf with two 50,000 GT (including three 5000GT) berths, supporting reservoir areas and public auxiliary facilities. It involves three downstream value chains, including the polypropylene value chain, the propylene oxide-polyether polyols-polyurethanes value chain, and the phenol acetone-bisphenol A- polycarbonate and epoxy resin value chain. It can co-produce about 100,000 tons/year of hydrogen, which will be used in fuel cells and distributed generation, or supplies to other users. The project will be completed and go into production in March 2022.

With an investment of CNY15 billion, the Phase II project includes two 1 million tons/year PDH units, three polypropylene units and tank farm. The project involves three downstream value chains, including the acrylonitrile value chain, the acrylic acid value chain and the polypropylene value chain. It can co-produce 100,000 tons/year of hydrogen, which will be used by industries in which hydrogen is an input.

The Phase Ⅲ project involves building a 1 million tons/year low carbon olefins- ethylene plant. It also includes a downstream 400,000-ton/year terpolymer unit, which will consume some of the ethylene products. The rest of the ethylene will be consumed by other downstream plants. The project involves three downstream value chains, namely EO/EG value chain, vinyl acetate value chain and alpha olefin value chain.

On last September 16, Maoming Municipal People's Government, Donghua Energy Limited by Share Ltd. and Guangdong Jinhui New Materials Equity Investment Center signed an investment agreement on the project for comprehensive utilization of alkane. In less than 3 months of the contract signing, the subsidiary company was set up. 13 days after the signing, the application for the land (with an area of 225,333 square meters) used for the first phase of the project was approved. Six months after the signing, the Phase I project was got off the ground, which will be completed in 2022.

On March 20, the Maoming Municipal People's Government held a press conference on the project. During the conference, Donghua Energy and technology licensor Honeywell UOP jointly released the next-generation PDH technology and signed a contract to apply it to the Maoming Project.

With PDH projects in Zhangjiagang and Ningbo, Donghua Energy has been the largest importer of liquefied petroleum gas in China for 7 consecutive years. In 2018, it became the biggest importer of liquefied petroleum gas in the world.

Maoming city has one of the largest integrated refining and chemical sites in China. In the 1950s, oil shale was discovered in Maoming. After the reform and opening up, the city shifted from oil exploitation to petrochemicals production. Currently, it can annually refine 22.5 million tons of oil and produce 1.1 million tons of ethylene.
