A fire is burning at the ExxonMobil Baytown Olefins Plant. Six people are being treated with non-life threatening injuries.
A shelter-in-place has been issued for residents who live west of the plant and south of 330. Goose Creek CISD said that the Service Center, Robert E. Lee High School, Peter E. Hyland, IMPACT ECHS, San Jacinto Elementary, Travis Elementary and Baytown Junior are all included in that shelter-in-place.
Emergency response teams, including the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, are monitoring air quality around the complex and in the community.
At 11:30 a.m. today, Mike Ashton, Public & Government Affairs Manager at the Baytown Complex, said the company is conducting personnel accounting to ensure all workers are accounted for.
“As a precaution, our Industrial Hygiene staff is conducting air quality monitoring at the site and fence line. We are cooperating with regulatory agencies. We deeply regret any disruption or inconvenience that this incident may have caused the community,” he said.
The unit affected processes light hydrocarbons including propylene.
This is the second time within a few months that a fire has broken out at an ExxonMobil plant. That previous incident occurred back in March.

The area has seen large fires this year involving other petrochemical companies, too. In April, one worker died after a KMCO tank holding a flammable chemical caught fire in Crosby. And in March, a fire burned for days at the ITC petrochemical storage facility in nearby Deer Park.

Until 3:20 PM (local time)

The shelter-in-place in Baytown has been lifted, and air monitoring near the explosion site has not detected anything concerning
The 37 people were taken to an off-site clinic, said Jason Duncan, plant manager at ExxonMobil Baytown Olefins Plant. He described the injuries as all minor first-degree burns and non-life-threatening and that no one has been hospitalized.
